What’s in My Bag: A Day Out With the Kids

My kids are at the age now (4 & 6 years old) that I don’t need a diaper bag, but I still need to carry a bag with me filled with kid necessities! Now that things are starting to open back up, we are taking day trips to outdoor areas. I always try to be prepared. I am the girl that has a first aid kit with me at all times. I am a nurse, after all.

Today, I am going to share a list of things I carry with me for a day out with the kids in the summer. First, you need a great bag, right? I absolutely LOVE this backpack. I originally got it to carry to work (purchased in October 2018), and I still do use it for work, but I also use it for days out with the kids and travel.

What’s in My Bag:

  • Clothes. Always a change of clothes for both kids. Top, bottoms, underwear and socks. I do not go ANYWHERE without a change of clothes for my kids. You truly never know. As my 4-year-old says, “Accidents happen!”
  • Wet bags. This goes with the above. I pack the clothes in wet bags like this one just in case. If I am changing their clothes, they are likely in a state that I don’t just want to throw them in the bag, so these wet bags come in handy! Perfect for a pool/lake bag too!
  • First-aid kit. I have been known to pack the entire medicine cabinet for trips, BUT for just a day out, I only pack a few things. I always have band-aids and antibiotic ointment. Accidents happen, right? I also like to pack Tylenol with me. Kids usually spike fevers at odd times and I like to be prepared. Mine have spiked a fever on a car ride several times and I have been thankful to always have Tylenol on hand.
  • Sunscreen. Even if it’s not sunny OR you don’t think you will need it, pack it anyway. I have been loving this sunscreen lately. Good coverage and works very well with sensitive skin!
  • Hats and sunglasses. This goes right along with good sun protection. We have several cheap sunglasses like this pair and I just toss them in every car and every bag we own :). I recently bought these hats for the kids and really like them.
  • SNACKS. All. The. Snacks. Think about how many snacks you think your kids will eat and pack twice as much. I like to pack pre-packaged snacks that won’t melt. Think goldfish, crackers, fruit bars and applesauce pouches.
  • Water. We have really become accustomed to reusable water bottles. My kids have owned these thermoses for a few years now and we love them! They don’t leak and they keep water cold all day! I also like that the straw is enclosed and cannot get dirty or contaminated!
  • Disinfectant. Kids touch everything. Literally, everything. And these days, we can’t be too careful with keeping their hands clean! I carry a bottle of hand sanitizer and a pack wet ones everywhere we go!
  • Cooling towels. My kids sweat. Bad. My oldest breaks out into an awful heat rash if he gets too hot. My mom suggested we buy these cloths and they have been a lifesaver this summer! I wet them before we go and put them in their individual bags. They have worked perfect and wash nicely. I like this pack of 4 so you always have one clean!

Now you are ready for a day out with the kids!

Have fun and stay well,

Angie
