Keeping Kids Busy: Our Favorite Things

Keeping kids busy for 12+ hours a day is challenging. I thought I would share some of our favorite things from the past few weeks. I am talking about things that are still semi-independent and keep kids entertained for at least 30 minutes at a time.

Here is a list:

  • Kinetic Sand — This stuff is way better than play-doh. Still makes a mess, but easily cleaned up. The kids enjoyed mixing it and building their own sand castle on the kitchen table with different tools you can get to play with it.
  • Crayola Twistables — My kids love a new coloring/writing utensil. These were new to us and I have already ordered a 2nd box for back-up. We love the crayons and the colored pencils.
  • Slime — This slime kit comes with pre-made slime and the kids can just add in all the fun stuff. The slime is not sticky. The add-ins can make a mess, but nothing a quick vacuuming doesn’t take care of.
  • LEGOs — My 5-year-old really loves LEGOs. A small LEGO kit keeps him entertained for quite a while. I also buy small kits for my 3-year-old and he puts them together for her! A few kits we have been loving are this one and this one.
  • Sidewalk chalk — Our city has started a #chalkyourwalk activity to brighten people’s day when they are out for a walk. We have really enjoyed this and seeing what is on the sidewalk when we walk 37 times a day! If the rain washes it away, you get to do it all over again! Don’t have a sidewalk? Chalk your driveway!
  • Books — My 5-year-old can read many of the early readers and he and his sister love to play school. We love the BOB books and the Biscuit books. He also likes to look through the Dog Man books. Seek and Find books are another favorite.

Recently, I have created a stockpile of new things. I use them as rewards or to fill the time when I am on my 10th meeting of the day.

I hope you and your children find something to enjoy from this list. I would love to hear your kids’ favorite things!
