Apple Recipes

On the weirdest of Derby Days, we went apple picking. My Kentucky friends will know what I mean and well, it’s 2020, so not much makes sense right now. Last weekend was The Kentucky Derby, Labor Day and our first apple picking trip. A pretty great weekend with my family of four.

On a whim, I scheduled us field passes to pick apples at Eckert’s Orchard in Versailles, KY on Saturday. The employees told us that the late freeze really hurt their crop and it was evident with the slim pickings of apples. We still managed to pick 10 pounds of gala and yellow delicious apples. We did fill in a little with some Jonathan apples they had imported from their orchard in Indiana.

So, what in the world was I going to do with all of those apples? I reached out to my friends on Instagram for ideas and found some great recipes. My sweet Oliver suggested apple bread and I found the most AMAZING apple bread recipe. EVER. If you make one thing from this post, let it be the bread.

Apple Recipes

  • Apple Bread: This is Debbie’s Amazing Apple Bread and AMAZING it is. Everybody in my house could not stop talking about it. The loaf was gone in a day. Every bite we just raved about this bread that really is more like a cake. The top creates this amazing crust in the oven. Seriously, you have to try this out!
  • Applesauce: I have never made a bad recipe from Ree Drummond and this one certainly did not disappoint. If you have children, I would definitely try this one out. I did cut the recipe in half, but would absolutely make the full recipe next time. We attempted the blender first and it did not work to smooth it out. We did have to use a food processor.
  • Apple Crisp: Whenever I think of fall and apples, I think of apple pie or apple crisp. We made an apple pie a few months back, so apple crisp was on the list this time. I do have to admit that I cut the amount of apples back and forgot to cut back the toppings so it was EXTRA sweet, but delicious. Highly recommend.
  • Apple Chips: A friend sent me this recipe and I was so excited to try to make my own apple chips. I used the oven and it took WAY longer than the recipe said, but they turned out PERFECT. I ended up leaving them in the oven at least 2 hours longer than the recipe stated. If you have time and love apple chips, try it out! I would recommend using a sweet apple. I do think a mandolin is also necessary to get the apples sliced evenly, too!

I also love the apple pie recipe that is linked at the end of THIS post.

I am hoping that we will get another day of apple picking in before Fall is over, but I am not sure how that will work with their crop and the freeze!

Which recipe are you going to try first?

Enjoy!

Angie
